The Georgia Performance Standards Mathematics curriculum is designed to achieve a balance among concepts, skills, and problem solving. The curriculum stresses rigorous concept development, presents realistic and relevant tasks, and maintains a strong emphasis on computational and procedural skills. At all grades, the curriculum encourages students to reason mathematically, to evaluate mathematical arguments both formally and informally, to use the language of mathematics to communicate ideas and information precisely, and to make connections among mathematical topics and to other disciplines.
Mathematics Common Core State Standards
In 2010, the Georgia State School Board of Education adopted a new set of standards known as the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics to be implemented in kindergarten through grade nine in school year 2012-2013. The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for Mathematics were finalized after multiple rounds of development and feedback from states and national organizations. Representatives from Georgia provided feedback at each round. The Georgia Performance Standards (GPS) Mathematics curriculum was one of the state curricula used to inform the creation of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. The rigor and relevance, as well as the balance of skills, concepts, and problem solving, found in GPS mathematics is mirrored in the CCSS.
The CCSS, like the GPS, is evidence and/or research based, vertically aligned, and internationally benchmarked so that all students are prepared to succeed in our global economy and society. Although some content may be in different grade levels, all of the standards addressed in the CCSS are also addressed in GPS mathematics. Most importantly, our work with GPS has prepared Georgia for the implementation of the CCSS. It is appropriate that the name given to Georgia's CCSS Mathematics reflect the influence of the GPS in the teaching and learning of mathematics. Therefore, Georgia's CCSS Mathematics curriculum is called Common Core Georgia Performance Standards (CCGPS).
Common Core Georgia Performance Standards Mathematics (CCGPS) will be fully implemented in grades kindergarten through nine in school year 2012-2013. Students beginning high school mathematics coursework in this school year will enroll in CCGPS Coordinate Algebra or Accelerated CCGPS Coordinate Algebra/Analytic Geometry A and will follow the appropriate CCGPS coursework pathway. Students who have previously completed high school GPS mathematics coursework will remain in GPS pathway courses.
